O’Sullivan Starts, Kerr Eyes Milestone as Gotham FC Faces Denver
Denise O’Sullivan earns her first start and Sam Kerr eyes a historic milestone as league-leading Gotham FC travels to face Denver Summit FC.
Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós is back on the touchline this Sunday with a reinforced squad and a chance to lock down the top spot in the standings. The league leaders face Denver Summit FC at Centennial Stadium in a highly anticipated afternoon showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Time, with CBS carrying the national broadcast.
Amorós returns to the technical area after a five-week parental leave. He wasted no time shaking up his starting eleven. Midfielder Denise O’Sullivan will make her first start for the club since recovering from a knee injury. The 32-year-old Irish international replaces Savannah McCaskill in a midfield that suddenly looks much more formidable.
O’Sullivan got her feet wet last week against Portland. Now, she is in from the whistle. She offers defensive steel and clinical transition play, traits Gotham will rely on heavily as the playoff race intensifies.
Chasing League History in Denver
Gotham enters Sunday sitting pretty. With a 13-3-6 record and 45 points, they hold a comfortable five-point lead over the second-place Washington Spirit. A positive result on the road would extend their club-record unbeaten streak, which survived a tense 1-1 draw against Portland Thorns FC last weekend. The visitors have been excellent away from home this season. Their 6-2-2 road record is tied with San Diego for the second-best in the league, trailing only Washington.
Striker Sam Kerr is the headline act. She is set to make her 50th regular-season appearance for Gotham. That milestone makes her just the 26th player in club history to reach the half-century mark.
History is on the line. If Kerr scores the game-winner, it will be the 20th of her regular-season NWSL career. Only three other players have ever reached that plateau. She leads a potent Gotham attack, flanked by Guro Reiten on the left and Jordynn Dudley on the right.
Shuffling the Midfield Deck
The midfield looks solid. Jaelin Howell gets the nod once again in her home state. The Colorado native has been an absolute ironwoman, starting every single game for Gotham this season. She will shield the backline alongside O’Sullivan and Jaedyn Shaw.
Shaw has been electric. She scored the crucial equalizer against Portland last week, bringing her season tally to six goals. She currently shares the team lead in goals and leads the club outright with four assists. Her creative spark will be key to unlocking Denver’s defensive block.
Amorós also made changes on the back line. Brazilian defender Bruninha makes her second start of the regular season, replacing Mandy Freeman at left back. It is Bruninha’s first start since August 7, offering fresh legs and dynamic attacking runs from the wide position.
A Decorated Defensive Unit
The rest of the defense remains unchanged. Midge Purce starts at right back, while Jess Carter and captain Tierna Davidson partner in central defense. Davidson and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger are both coming off individual honors. The league named both to the NWSL Best XI for August.
Berger has been a human wall. She posted a league-best 0.50 goals-against average in August. She is now just one shutout away from breaking her own single-season club record of 10, which she set back in 2025.
Despite the stellar starting lineup, injuries continue to test Gotham’s squad depth. Midfielders Sofia Cook and Rose Lavelle are out for the second straight week. Cook is dealing with a lower leg injury, while Lavelle is sidelined with a head injury. Defenders Kayla Duran and Emily Sonnett remain on the season-ending injury list with knee issues.
Gotham’s bench remains deep. Backup keepers Shelby Hogan and Teagan Wy are joined by Mandy Freeman, Tess Boade, Savannah McCaskill, Talia Sommer, Meredith Speck, Taryn Torres, and forward Andrea Kitahata.
