Wheel of Fortune’s Jim Thornton Suspended Over Chatroom Photos
Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended following a mid-air incident involving controversial chatroom photos viewed on a flight.

Mid-Air Incident Leads to Game Show Fallout
“Wheel of Fortune” announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended from the long-running television game show. The sudden move follows a tense mid-air confrontation and a police investigation at Los Angeles International Airport.
A fellow airline passenger photographed Thornton’s laptop screen during a flight back in May. The images showed Thornton logged into a controversial online chatroom associated with pedophilia. While Thornton’s legal team claims the incident was an innocent mistake, show producers acted quickly to bench the prominent voice actor.
The Passenger’s Discovery on a Flight to Los Angeles
The incident occurred aboard an American Airlines flight traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Los Angeles. A passenger sitting near Thornton noticed his open laptop. The screen displayed an active, highly explicit digital chat.
The passenger began taking photographs of the screen after observing text messages that raised immediate red flags. One message displayed on Thornton’s screen read, “Couple of cute boys and a hot little girl.” Another message referenced “All-you-can-eat Boyfett,” which the witness understood as a code for locating underage boys at a local restaurant.
A third message explicitly mentioned “CP,” a standard internet abbreviation for child pornography. The passenger was deeply disturbed by the unfolding scene on the flight.

Mid-Air Alert and the LAX Police Response
The passenger quietly notified the flight cabin crew and shared the photos she had taken on her phone. Recognizing the severity of the allegations, the crew immediately alerted the captain.
The captain contacted ground authorities while the plane was still in the air. When the flight taxied to the gate at LAX, law enforcement officers were waiting.
Officers boarded the aircraft and escorted Thornton off for questioning. After a thorough initial screening, authorities allowed Thornton to leave the airport. He wasn’t placed under arrest, and no criminal charges were filed against him.
The Defense: Suicide Prevention Advocacy
Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, issued a detailed statement defending the announcer’s actions. Hart claims Thornton wasn’t seeking out illicit content. Instead, she said his online activity was part of his personal suicide-prevention advocacy work.
According to Hart, Thornton lost a close relative to suicide two years ago. Since then, he has spent significant time in online support groups, frequently visiting the official government-backed site, 988lifeline.org, to help those in crisis.

The Chatroom Mix-up and the 57-Minute Gap
The defense centers on an alleged technological mix-up. Hart stated that an acquaintance from the suicide-prevention network sent Thornton a link that led him to “lifeline.chat.” Despite the similar name, that domain has no connection to the national 988 crisis network.
Instead, the website is a forum designed for individuals who experience pedophilic thoughts but seek to avoid acting on them. Thornton claims he didn’t realize the nature of the forum when he first logged on.
However, digital evidence challenges part of Thornton’s defense. Timestamps visible in the passenger’s photos show Thornton was active in the forum for at least 57 minutes. His defense team hasn’t offered an explanation for why he remained in the chatroom for nearly an hour on a commercial flight.
No Crimes Committed, Lawyer Emphasizes
Still, his lawyer maintains that Thornton’s actions were entirely legal. Hart emphasized that the website itself doesn’t host illegal content or child pornography. “In short, my client did nothing wrong,” Hart said.
The defense attorney added that police confirmed no crime had occurred after reviewing the material. Thornton has not been charged with any crime in connection with the incident, and he remains free.
Broader Implications for Wheel of Fortune
The suspension comes at a sensitive time for the syndicated game show, which recently navigated a major transition after Pat Sajak retired. The announcer’s role is central to the program’s familiar, lighthearted tone.
Sony Pictures Television hasn’t commented on Thornton’s future with the franchise. With advertisers highly sensitive to any scandal involving children, industry insiders believe Thornton’s return to the announcer booth remains highly uncertain.
