Witkoff and Kushner Launch Moscow-Kyiv Peace Blitz

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Vladimir Putin in Moscow ahead of a high-stakes trip to Kyiv to pitch a new peace blueprint.

A high-stakes diplomatic backchannel has cracked wide open in Moscow.

White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, spent Saturday huddled with Russian President Vladimir Putin inside the Kremlin. It is the most aggressive move yet by the administration to force an end to the grinding war in Ukraine. The American delegation is now racing to Kyiv with a fresh peace proposal in hand.

The weekend blitz began with a intense three-hour meeting in Moscow. The session eventually spilled over into a working dinner with Putin, according to Kremlin officials. It marks a dramatic escalation in direct US-Russia contacts, bypassing traditional diplomatic channels to establish a raw framework for peace.

Inside the Kremlin Meeting

Kremlin footage showed Witkoff and Kushner seated across from Putin on Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere appeared strikingly familiar. Putin opened the talks by acknowledging the immense complexity of the conflict before offering a direct nod to the White House.

“The situation we need to work through today is, of course, not a simple one,” Putin said. “But before we begin doing that, I want to ask you to convey my very best wishes, and a word of gratitude, to the President of the United States, Mr. Trump.”

Witkoff matched the warm tone with a personal reflection. “When we retire, we’ll have all these incredible stories, and incredible memories,” Witkoff told Putin. “Yours will be right at the top of it all.”

The US negotiators did not travel alone. Joining them at the table were Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, the influential head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. Dmitriev later took to social media to call the session an “important peacemaking visit.”

What Was Put on the Table

Washington is trying to move fast. Ushakov told reporters after the meeting that the American team arrived exceptionally well-prepared.

The Americans expressed a desire to halt the fighting immediately. According to Ushakov, they presented a comprehensive list of proposals to jumpstart a settlement. Kushner and Witkoff promised to convey Putin’s personal feedback directly to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.

A White House official confirmed the talks focused on concrete next steps. The official added that substantive plans would be unveiled to the public in the coming weeks. Wall Street and international markets are watching closely for any sign of a breakthrough that could lift heavy energy and financial sanctions.

The Pivot to a Battered Kyiv

The diplomatic team faces a completely different reality in Kyiv. Sunday’s visit will be the first time either Witkoff or Kushner has set foot in the war-torn Ukrainian capital since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

They will arrive in a city under immense physical strain. Russian forces have kept up a relentless barrage of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv. Just one day before the US delegation arrived, a direct Russian missile strike heavily damaged the headquarters of the SBU, Ukraine’s domestic security service.

Zelensky has repeatedly warned that his military is running dangerously low on air defense interceptors. Without them, the capital is largely defenseless against advanced ballistic missiles. On Saturday, Russian strikes hit two major airports near Kyiv, including Boryspil, which once served as the country’s primary international gateway.

A Fragile, Temporary Truce

To ensure the safety of the American envoys, Putin ordered a targeted three-day pause in Russian airstrikes on Kyiv. He made it clear, however, that this is not a permanent ceasefire.

Zelensky quickly offered a reciprocal gesture. After speaking with Witkoff and Kushner by phone on Saturday, the Ukrainian leader announced a parallel freeze on strikes targeting the Russian capital.

“From now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow, and we expect the Russians to do the same regarding Kyiv,” Zelensky wrote on X.

Zelensky said his team is fully prepared for a serious, detailed negotiation with the American envoys. The Ukrainian president must now balance the desperate need for continued Western military aid with a White House determined to freeze the frontlines.

The Financial and Political Stakes

The presence of Dmitriev, who manages Russia’s state investment funds, suggests that economic levers are central to the US strategy. Billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets and sweeping economic sanctions remain Washington’s strongest bargaining chips.

Kushner’s involvement also signals a highly personalized style of diplomacy. He previously brokered the Abraham Accords in the Middle East during Trump’s first term by leveraging business relationships and direct lines to foreign leaders.

Critics in Congress are already raising questions about bypassing the State Department. However, supporters argue that traditional diplomacy has failed to stop the killing, and a radical new approach is the only way forward.

The next 24 hours in Kyiv will determine whether this rapid-fire shuttle diplomacy can actually yield a workable peace, or if the pause in violence is merely a brief intermission in an endless war.
